Verland Widga Obituary

Verland Dale Widga, age 85, of Stromsburg, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2021 at Bryan LGH West Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 11, 2021 at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg with Pastor Neil Kloppenborg officiating and Masonic Rites. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 10 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church. Organist will be Gayleen Nestor. Musical selections will be "Victory in Jesus", and "Amazing Grace." Pallbearers will be Ron Dickson, Willis Waller, Dallas Puntney, Lynn Johnson, Marlowe Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Jay Mentink. Honorary pallbearers will be Clark Yungdahl, Jim Marak, Jon Tonniges, Gregg Kresha, Joe Kresha, and Tom Stevens. Interment will be in the Swede Plains Cemetery near Polk.
Verland was born September 20, 1936 to Lloyd Edward and Helga Marie (Johnson) Widga west of Stromsburg on the family farm. He attended school in Polk graduating from Polk High School in  1954. He then attended Norfolk College where he studied agriculture. He returned to Polk where he drove the milk route.
On December 8, 1957 he was united in marriage to Janice Rae Jones in Hordville, Nebraska. To this union three children were born.  
In 1962 he began working for a local farmer, Cliff and Irene Carlson, as a hired hand. In 1967 he started farming with his dad Lloyd and brother Don in the Polk area.  Verland then began auctioneering with Lloyd Hanquist and later joined with Dick Mundt to start Widga Mundt Auctioneering company. He continued in the agriculture business as he formed WD Trucking and was a truck driver hauling livestock. In 1995 he moved from the farm into Stromsburg where he resided until his passing.
Verland was a member of the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg where he held various positions including administration board, head usher and was a member of the choir. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Polk County Ag Society, 4-H Council, and Swede Plain Cemetery Board.
He enjoyed tractor pulls and auctioneering.
Survivors include his children, Randy (Patty) Widga of Stromsburg, Rhonda (Larry) Lange of St. Paul, Roger (Nathan Kindle) Widga of Fort Worth, TX; grandchildren, Amy (Tyler) Reynolds of Garnett, KS, Christina Bell of Lincoln, Nick (Arielle) Bell of Stromsburg, Jacob and Jeremy Lange of St. Paul; great grandchildren, Kelsey (fiance Daniel), Nathan, Cadon and Lane Reynolds of Garnett, KS, Zaeden, Gatsby and Lazurus Bell of Stromsburg; Rest of Life Partner Susan Peterson of Stromsburg; extended family: daughters Tami (Todd Fenton) Peterson of Broken Bow, Chari (Ryan) Peterson of Stromsburg, Kristi (Tim) Brazda of Stromsburg, Mindi (Cory) Roth of Loveland, CO, extended grandchildren: Jaimee (Cody) Ortegren, Connar and Cade Brazda, Sydnee, Hallee, and Preston Goossen, Tylee Fenton, Anslee and Jace Roth and great grandson Colt Ortegren; brothers Donald (Diana) Widga of Polk and Dennis Widga of Torrington, WY; nieces, nephews and a host of other relative and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Janice who passed away October 5, 2002; grandson Brandson Widga and sister-in-law Judy Widga.
