Shirley was born April 9, 1935, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Charles A. and Lena H. (Shenck) Picard. She attended Meadowdale Country School and graduated from Benson High School in 1953. Following high school, Shirley worked at Northwestern Bell.
Shirley was first united in marriage to Dick Lemp. Tragically, Dick and their daughter, June Alice, were killed in a car accident on December 23, 1960. On April 17, 1965, she was united in marriage to Merlin Nyberg at the Evangelical Free Church in Columbus, Nebraska. To this union, two children joined them through adoption.
Shortly after their marriage and while living in Monticello, Iowa, the family returned to Nebraska following the sudden passing of Merlin’s father, Rudolph Nyberg, from a heart attack, to take over the family farm.
Shirley was deeply devoted to her faith, family, and community. She served as a Sunday school teacher, Superintendent of Women’s Ministries, community Bible school volunteer, and Polk Bible Camp volunteer. Her faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was the foundation of her life. Shirley also served her community as a member of the Polk Fire Department for 25 years and was involved in EMT service.
Shirley enjoyed quilting, gardening, animals, baking, and working alongside Merlin on the farm.
Survivors include her husband, Merlin Nyberg of Stromsburg; her children, Connie (Pat) Powell of Stromsburg and Scott Nyberg of O’Fallon, Missouri; grandchildren McKenna (Carson) Huenefeld, Owen Powell (fiancé Cassidy Hepburn), Laine Nyberg, Claire Nyberg, and Anna Nyberg; great-grandchildren Mason, Wesley, Amelia, and Brynnley Huenefeld; sister Carolyn Peterson of Spokane, Washington; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Lena Picard; her first husband, Dick Lemp; daughter June Alice Lemp; infant son Jimmy; sister Rose Cook; and brother-in-law Dave Peterson.
