Sam Royce Cowan Obituary

Sam Royce Cowan, age 82 of Stromsburg, Nebraska, passed away August 2, 2025 at his home in Stromsburg.

A memorial service will be held Friday, August 8, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Dubas Funeral Home in Stromsburg. There is no visitation. Inurnment will be in the Stromsburg. Cemetery.

Sam was born June 6, 1943 to Byron F. and Edna Ruth (Lavene) Cowan in Little Rock, Arkansas. He attended elementary school in De Falls Bluff and graduated from Kearney High School in 1961. While in high school Sam participated in football, wrestling and track. He then attended Wesleyan University in Lincoln where he received his BA in Physics. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame both in high school and at Nebraska Wesleyan.

On June 6, 1965 he was united in marriage to Kathleen Ann Krueger in Lyons. To this union three boys were born. For many years Sam set up the systems to manufacture hard drives which took the family to multiple locations. He began his teaching career in the early 1990’s at Central Community College in Columbus, which he felt was his favorite job. In 2002 he began at BD’s training employees where he worked until returning to Central Community College where he served on the Board of Governors for 10 years.

Sam enjoyed HAM radio which he started at age 14. His call sign was W0OAJ. He also enjoyed coin collecting and was the author of two books, “Handbook of Modern Electronics Math” and “Digital Logic with Practical Applications”. Sam and Kathy enjoyed traveling, visiting every state.

Survivors include his wife Kathy of Stromsburg; sons Steven (Terre) Cowan of Lincoln, Russ Cowan of Kearney and Paul (Jodi) Cowan of Seward; four grandchildren: Jaylee and Ryane Cowan and twins Alyssa and Stuart Cowan; three sisters: Beverly Kring of Axtell, Marilyn Wittrock of Burns, Oregon and his twin sister Sandra (Cary) Leonard of Shawnee, Oklahoma; and a host other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers-in-law Dean Kring and Art Wittrock.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated later.
