Obituary

Ruth Ann Peterson, age 94, of Benedict, Nebraska, passed away July 28, 2022 at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Health Center in Osceola.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 1, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at the Stromsburg Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Brill officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 31, from 3:00 to 5:00 at Dubas Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Pianist will be Gayleen Nestor. Teresa Linn will be vocalist singing “His Eye Is On The Sparrow.” Musical selections will be “Amazing Grace”, and “It Is Well With My Soul.” Pallbearers will be Clint Peterson, Clay Peterson, Jared Peterson, Connor Peterson, Todd Niemeyer and Owen Baker. Honorary pallbearers will be Martina Niemeyer and Eric Peterson. Interment will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Ruth Ann was born April 9, 1928 in Gresham to Edward and Anna Mathilda (Fredrickson) Sterup. She attended school in Gresham, graduating in 1945. She then attended Hastings College where she received her Bachelors degree in Business Education. She was a business teacher in Central City, McCool Junction and Benedict.

On November 16, 1952 she was united in marriage to Donald Lee Peterson at the Eden Baptist Church in Stromsburg. To this union three sons were born. She was baptized on December 13, 1953. The family lived and farmed on the home place near Stromsburg.

Ruth Ann began working for Overland Sand & Gravel where she was bookkeeper for 23 years, retiring in 1993.

She was a member of a variety of organizations including the Stromsburg Baptist Church where she was Sunday School teacher, member of church choir, mission circle and served in many other positions; Swedish Festival Queen in 1985; 50 year member of P.E.O. Chapter AR; 60 year member of American Legion Auxiliary Post #132; U-Go-I-Go Club; Birthday Club member for over 60 years; and a member of the Vintage Voices.

She enjoyed decorating and entertaining, creative and artistic projects, helping with a video project of WWII Korean and Vietnam veterans “For the Record”, teaching flag etiquette education for elementary students, researching family and church history, and gathering with her Gresham graduating class of 1945.

Those left to cherish her memories are sons: John E. Peterson of Fredericksburg, VA, Lee D. (Michel) Peterson of Benedict and daughter-in-law Jacki Peterson of Marquette; grandchildren: Eric Peterson, Clint (Kerry) Peterson of York, Martina (Dr. Todd) Niemeyer of Papillion, Clay (Morgan) Peterson of Stromsburg, Jared (Heidi) Peterson of Gretna and Dr. Connor Peterson (special friend Taylor Regan of York) of Benedict; great grandchildren: Kaylie Smith, Declan and Dax Peterson, Audriana, Evan, Lillian and Brielle Niemeyer, Kyndal and Presley Peterson; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald who passed away March 21, 2003; son Jay D. Peterson; her parents; brother and sister-in-law Armond Dale and Dorothy Lou Sterup; brother-in-law Ralph E. Peterson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Wendell and Dorothy Appleton.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated later.

Dubas Funeral Home of Stromsburg and Osceola has been entrusted with arrangements.
