Mary Ellen 'Toodie' (Schaecher) Wobig Obituary

Mary Ellen (Toodie) Schaecher Wobig, age 97, was born July 16, 1926, in Lindsay, Nebraska to Leo and Clara Schaecher. She passed away on January 22, 2024, in her daughter's home in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Toodie was the youngest of four girls. She attended Holy Family School, graduating in 1944. Following high school, Toodie worked for Mutual of Omaha. Toodie was united in marriage to Glen D. Wobig on September 2, 1946. Glen and Toodie were high school sweethearts. It was love at first sight. To that union, five children were born. Following their wedding, Glen and Toodie lived in Newman Grove, Nebraska. They moved to Osceola, Nebraska, in 1950, where Glen opened Wobig & Son Implement. In 1961, Toodie and Glen purchased the bowling alley (Lorre Lanes), where Toodie was best known for her delicious baked goods.

Toodie was a member of the Legion Auxiliary for 72+ consecutive years, with 54 years being in Osceola. She was a member of St. Vincent's Choir and St. Vincent's Altar Society since 1950, Gab-A-Lots since 1952, and PEO since 2000. She was an Osceola Girl Scout Troop Leader and the only woman serving on the City Planning Commission when Dr. Monson was the mayor. She was also a member of the library board.

In 2015, they donated the Musselman's Popcorn Stand back to the community to be restored and enjoyed in the Pocket Park for many years. The Osceola Q150 Committee honored Toodie as Osceola's Sesquicentennial Queen.

Toodie enjoyed crafts such as sewing identical Easter outfits for her children and painting. In their retirement years, Toodie and Glen's business, known as "Wood N Things," provided much enjoyment for many. Toodie was an avid reader, making finding something she had not read difficult.

Toodie is survived by her children Mary (Dennis) Jones of Olathe, KS; Ann (Tom) McCord of Prairie Village, KS; John Wobig of Lincoln, NE; Julie (Dennis) Jarecke of Clarks, NE: and Lorre Wobig of Lincoln, NE, 11 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.
