Obituary

Luella Mae ‘Tootie’ Gable, age 79, of Shelby, Nebraska, passed away at her home on July 28, 2023.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with Father Andrew Litt officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, August 1 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Rosary. Organist will be Avis Rathje. Vocalists will be Stacy Stewart and Denise Humlicek. Musical selections will be “In The Garden”, “How Great Thou Art”, “On Eagle’s Wings”, “One Bread, One Body”, and “Go Rest High On That Mountain.” Pallbearers will be Colton Gable, Donovan Otto, Quinlan Otto, Rowan Otto, Montana Gable and Conner Pinney. Honorary pallbearers will be Riley Otto, Mackenzie Pinney and Kayleigh Pinney. Interment will be in the Shelby Cemetery.

Luella was born on March 6, 1944, the seventh and youngest child of John L. and Hildagarde (Rathje) Martens. She grew upon on a farm south of Rising City. She attended nearby District 43 country school and later Rising City High School, graduating in 1962.

After graduating she apprenticed at House of Beauty in Columbus and obtained her cosmotology license in May of 1963.

She married Donald E. Gable on August 31, 1963 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. They made their home in Shelby. Luella worked at Harold’s Beauty Salon and LaMyra’s Beauty Shoppe in Shelby before becoming a full time homemaker and took correspondence courses, gaining a Graduation Certificate in Advertising and Illustrating Art in 1972.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Anne’s Altar Society. She enjoyed gardening, canning, drawing, jigsaw puzzles and most especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughters Lisa (Neil) Otto and Myra (Evan) Pinney, both of Osceola; nine grandchildren: Colton (Haley) Gable of Silver Creek, Riley Otto of Colorado Springs, CO, Sgt. Donovan Otto of Middleton, CT, Quinlan Otto of Wayne, Rowan Otto of Osceola, Montana Gable of Denver, CO, Conner Pinney of Omaha, Mackenzie Pinney of Norfolk, and Kayleigh Pinney of Osceola; two great-grandchildren; Oliver Bushhousen and Aislynn Bushhousen of Giltner; two sisters: Irene Jones of Elkhorn and Mary Hoffman of Rising City; one brother Harold (Joann) Martens of Rising City; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, who passed away October 25, 2017, her parents John and Hildagarde; sister Ruth (Ivan) (Harvey) Want Weber; brothers Louis (Margaret) Martens, and Lawrence (Charlotte) Martens; and brothers-in-law Gary Jones and Merlyn Hoffman.
