Louis was born on January 28, 1937 to Lewis Schott and Rose (Gabel) Schott. He attended grade school at Rural District 63. He then attended Osceola High School and graduated in 1954. After high school, he farmed with his dad from 1954 to 1959. Uncle Sam called in 1959, and “Jr.” was drafted in the Army. After basic training, he was stationed in Augsburg, Germany. During his service he was able to visit several countries in western Europe. He was discharged in 1961 and returned home and continued to farm until his retirement in 2013.
Louis was a 3rd generation farmer on the family farm. One of his great joys was to pass it on and watch the 4th and the 5th generation of his family continue to farm the land. During his years of farming, he loved to grain farm but also enjoyed feeding cattle and hogs. Louis was a pioneer of irrigation in Polk County and had one of the first irrigation wells in 1957 and one of the first center pivots in the county in the early 1970s.
Louis was Polk County Farmers Union President for almost 15 years. He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church in Shelby, Nebraska. During his years, he served on the church board. He also was on the Osceola Alumni Committee for countless years and had the job of keeping up the alumni mailing lists until his passing. He was a member of the Osceola American Legion Post 91.
Louis had several interests and hobbies. One of them was photography and videography. He always had the latest technology and from this took several pictures and videos of local people’s weddings. He took a great interest in computers. He had the first computer in Polk County in 1980 and has owned many computers since then. Through this he developed his own grain marketing software that he continued to use until his passing. He also was an avid reloader of ammunition and passed on his skills to some of his younger generations.
Louis was a very proud uncle of four beautiful nieces and four okay nephews. He was proud of the great relationships he had with them until his death. He also had 21 great nieces and nephews that he loved to watch grow up and begin their own families.
Survivors include niece Marcia (Don) Reznicek of Ord, niece Janet (Rick) Ekstrom of Omaha, nephew Don (Bonnie) Augustin of Shelby, nephew Ron (Deb) Girard of Osceola, nephew Roger (Sharon) Augustin of Osceola, nephew John (Debbie) Girard of Osceola, niece Connie Alexander of Osceola, 21 great nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
