Obituary

Lois Jean Behr, age 93, of Stromsburg, Nebraska, passed away March 25, 2023 at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 30, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Stromsburg with Pastor Keet Redden officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 29 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Dubas Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Congregational hymns will be “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”, and “I Love To Tell The Story.” Solo will be “My God and I.” Interment will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Lois was born December 13, 1929 to Gerrit Henry and Margaret (Van Eldik) Harmelink in Cedar Grove, Wisconsin. At an early age, the family moved to Rock Valley, Iowa. She attended elementary school at rural Sioux #7 and graduated from Rock Valley Public School in Iowa. After working for three years, she attended Northwestern college in Orange City and Westmar at Le Mars, Iowa, after which she obtained her elementary teaching certificate and taught in a country rural school for two years.

On December 28, 1951 she was united in marriage to Vernon Earl Behr at Reformed Church in Rock Valley, Iowa. To this union three children were born. After farming for 13 years, the family moved to Rock Valley, Iowa where Lois worked as a teachers aide in the Rock Valley Public School system.

In 1975, the family moved to Stromsburg, Nebraska. Lois worked as a secretary in an insurance office, retiring in 1994.

She enjoyed cards, bowling and baking, plus she enjoyed her children’s activities. She also enjoyed time they could spend with family and grandchildren.

She was a member of Evangelical Free Church where she was active as a Sunday School teacher, children’s choir and co-chair of ladies circle. She was a member of Stromsburg Woman’s Club and a past member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Survivors include children: Donna (Dean) Carlsen of Ellijay, Georgia, Keith (Patti) Behr of Davenport, Iowa and Galen (Marsha) Behr of Omaha; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Vernon who passed away September 17, 2021; and granddaughter Abigail Hagen.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated later.

Dubas Funeral Home of Stromsburg and Osceola has been entrusted with arrangements.
