Laura was born July 14, 1958 in Seward, Nebraska to Eldon and Ann (Kosch) Gruntorad. She attended school in Seward, graduating from Seward High School in 1977. She then attended Platte County Community College in Columbus, Nebraska where she studied Clerical Administration.

On August 4, 1979 she was united in marriage to Ronald R. Alt at St. Vincents Catholic Church in Seward, Nebraska. To this union four children were born. Laura and Ron lived in Columbus where they built a new home. During this time Laura worked at JCPenney in Columbus. In 1993 they moved to the farm by Shelby. She worked as the Shelby Librarian for 25 years, retiring in 2025.

Laura was a member of Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the church guild, and taught 2nd grade CCD for many years. She was a member and past president of the Nebraska chapter of the World Organization of China Painting. She enjoyed flowers and spending time with family and grandchildren. Family was everything to Laura, without question her family knew that she would be there for every event big or small. She showed up to all activities over the years and spent countless hours in the bleachers with no complaints, she was right where she wanted to be. The amount of love and support given to her children and grandchildren was immeasureable; she was always just a phone call away for any need.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald R. Alt of Shelby; her children, Jennifer (Andrew) Condon of Cheyenne, WY, Jonathan (Elizabeth) Alt of Gretna, NE, Bryant (Aubrey) Alt of Shelby, NE, and Katrina (Daniel) Mayall of Bellwood, NE; grandchildren Tyler Condon, Trenten Condon, Thorin Condon, Aspen Condon, Genevieve Alt, Tucker Alt, Lena Alt, Elliot Alt, Klayton Havlovec, and Brooks Mayall; mother Ann Gruntorad of Seward, NE; sister Julie (Ron) Prochaska of Seward, NE; and a host of other relatives and friends.
