Kenneth Michael Kirby

Kenneth “Mick” Michael Kirby, age 82, of Silver Creek, Nebraska, passed away at his home May 22, 2022.

A memorial service will be held Monday, June 6, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola with Father Bill L'Heureux officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Kenneth “Mick” was born April 27, 1940 in Shelby, Nebraska to James Novel and Marie W. (Schlesinger) Kirby. The family moved to rural Silver Creek where Mick attended school and graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1958. While in high school he began galloping horses for his dad and when he turned 18 he started his horse training career.

On April 13, 1961 he was united in marriage to Betty M. Griffiths in Columbus, NE. To this union five children were born.

His lifelong passion for training horses took him to several states on the horse racing circuit including Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska. He retired in 2012.

He loved his grandchildren and following their activities. He enjoyed puzzles, gardening, the outdoors, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife Betty of Silver Creek; children, Mike Kirby of Silver Creek, Deb Kirby of Lincoln, Patty (Ted) Hair of Hickman, Dana (Angie) Kirby of Silver Creek and Theresa (Jim) Smith of Lincoln; seven grandchildren: Lanea Hair, Dillon Kirby, Taylor (Reid) Jones, Trey Hair, McKayla Kirby, Colton Kirby and Brittany (Calvin) Roberts; one great grandchild Beckham Roberts; one brother Dennis (Joyce) Kirby of Silver Creek and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers Ben and Jim.

Dubas Funeral Home of Osceola and Stromsburg has been entrusted with arrangements.
