Jerome Carl Scholz, age 82, of Shelby, Nebraska, passed away January 27, 2024 at Emerald Care Nursing and Rehab in Columbus.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with Father Andrew Litt officiating. Organist will be Avis Rathje. Musical selections will be “Be Not Afraid”, “Only A Shadow”, “One Bread, One Body”, and “Amazing Grace.” Pallbearers will be Chase Kumpf, Larry Miksch, Melvin Miksch, Ron Carlson, David Bonsack, and Bill Coffin. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 30 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. Rosary at the church. Interment will be in the Shelby Cemetery.
Jerome was born November 16, 1941 in Shelby to Carl Joseph and Rose Marie (Rohrich) Scholz. He attended school in Shelby and graduated from Shelby High School in 1959 where he was active in all sports, football, basketball and track, receiving many awards and medals. Following high school Jerome began farming on the same farm he grew up on. He was a born farmer and also worked for Abts Well Drilling for several years.
On September 3, 1962 he was united in marriage to Mary Alice Pieters at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. To this union two children were born. They lived on the family farm north of Shelby. The Scholz Farm Inc. was founded in 1979 and the corporation is still active today in the farming industry.
In 2021 they moved to Meridian Gardens in Columbus, then in 2022 Jerome moved to Cottonwood Place and recently he moved to Emerald Nursing and Rehab in Columbus where he resided until his passing.
Jerome loved the outdoors, farming, growing crops, and raising farm animals. He also enjoyed cattle sales, tractor pulls and going to the Creston fish frys.
Survivors include his wife Mary Alice of Columbus; daughter Debra Scholz and son Douglas Scholz both of Shelby; sister Janice Bonsack of York, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Rose; sister and brothers-in-law Margaret and Burdett Williamson and Jerry Bonsack.
Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated later.
