Jerlene Oneida Nielsen, age 94, of Stromsburg, Nebraska, passed away December 4, 2024 at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 9, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg with Pastors Mary and Craig Pinley officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Pianist will be Ryan Cooper. Vocalist will be Sunshine Metschke singing “Someday Soon.” Musical selections will be “Amazing Grace”, and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”. Pallbearers will be Eric Nielsen, Corey Metschke, David Matlock, Jacob Nielsen, Bennett Nielsen, and Kaed Nielsen. Interment in the Greenwood Cemetery in York will follow lunch at the church.

Jerlene was born July 25, 1930 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma to Jewell and Katherine (Kleinholz) Matlock. The family lived on a farm northwest of McCool Jct. She was the oldest of seven children and at a young age she learned to cook, clean, and sew. She attended school in York graduating in 1948.

On December 11, 1949 she was united in marriage to Morris Daniel Nielsen in York, Nebraska. To this union two children were born. The family lived west of Stromsburg where Jerlene was a homemaker and farm wife. Jerlene also worked as bookkeeper at Jensen Propane in York for her sister and brother-in-law and with the activities department at the Midwest Covenant Home.

She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg, a charter member of Polk County W.I.F.E. and a member of Extension Club.

She enjoyed baking, canning, reading, making Barbie clothes and making dog treats for the grandpups. She always had Schwans treats for the grandkids.

Survivors include son Lanny (Dianne) Nielsen of Stromsburg; four grandchildren: Sunshine (Corey) Metschke of Lincoln, Eric (Nikki) Nielsen of Adel, IA, Johanna Nielsen of Stromsburg and Rachel Nielsen of Stromsburg; seven great grandchildren: Luke, Samuel and Levi Metschke, Bennett, Kaed and Cameron Nielsen and Jacob Nielsen; sister-in-law Rosie Matlock of Thayer; brother Francis (Tammy) Matlock of York; brothers-in-law Joey Jensen of York and Armand Schmoker of Osceola; sister-in-law Barb Matlock of Country Club, Missouri and Phyllis (Rich) Fusby of Kearney; nieces, nephews and special niece and helper Billie Flick (Jeff Worswick); and a host of other relatives and friends

She was preceded in death by her husband Morris who passed away July 21, 2015; son Daniel; parents Jewell and Katherine; brothers Delbert, Maynard, Harlan and Gary (Billie) Matlock; sister Luverne Jensen; parents-in-law Hans and Ruth Nielsen; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Milas and Leland Peterson, Marian and Rex Obermier; sister-in-law Marjorie Schmoker; brother and sister-in-law Clarence and Betty Nielsen; and niece Kelly Matlock..

Memorials are suggested to the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg.
