Irene was born July 26, 1920 to Silas and Suzanne (Sands) Cook in Stanton, Nebraska at the time her father worked for the railroad. The Cook family later became farmers in Polk County and Irene attended Stoner Country School and Osceola High School. After graduating from high school, Irene worked at the Polk County Courthouse in the agricultural office until August 24, 1940 when she wed Vivian Myron Dunning of Shelby. Irene said due to the situation in the country with World War II the couple dressed in their finery and eloped to Seward. “That was a fun day” Irene reported as they ate at a nice restaurant, a big treat at that time our history.

Irene loved to tell her family about ‘the olden days’ and one enjoyed story was how her Stoner school teacher’s Model T would not start after school. The teacher walked the two miles to Irene’s parents for help and because the family was serviced only by horse and wagon her father strapped a pillow on a horse and she rode home to the Shelby area to await automotive help the next day. Irene’s stories will always be cherished by her family.

Irene was a social and active lady with a special love for friends which showed in her desire to never leave the Polk County area. There was a special life long relationship with her sister Virginia (Cook) Miller and also a forever friendship with Ruth (Heckman) Macbeth. Ruth walked into Stoner school as a shy, new student in early elementary years with kids staring at her. Irene shared her school desk with that the beginnings of a lifelong friendship.

Christian faithfulness was always important to Irene with her attendance in the Evangelical United Brethren Church serving as president for the Hope Circle and later attendance at the United Methodist Church.

Irene is survived by her daughter Janet Yeutter of Sedalia, MO; grandchildren: Shane Yeutter of Trinidad, CO, Sharla Schillereff of Denver, CO, Tracy (Tommy) Kitts of Maryville, TN, Mike (Jennifer) Dunning of Sugar Hill, GA, and Larry Dunning of Maryville, TN; plus many great and great-great grandchildren. Irene leaves a host of relatives and friends who touched her life in a meaningful way just as she touched everyone she met.

She was preceded in death by her parents Si and Sue Cook; husband Vivian ‘Vip’ Dunning; son Jerry Dunning, sister Virginia Miller, infant brother Charles, and son-in-law Eldon Yeutter.

“Who will free me! Thank God it has been done by Jesus Christ our Lord – He has set me free, Thank God!” - Irene’s personal thoughts.
