Harold Martens Obituary

Harold ‘Nobbie’ John Martens, age 86, of Rising City, Nebraska, passed away December 6, 2023 at the Good Samaritan Society in Osceola.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, December 11, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with Father Andrew Litt officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday, December 10 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. with a 4:00 p.m. Rosary at the church. Lector will be Gary Novak. Organist will be Avis Rathje. Vocalists will be Barb Ingwersen, Jackie Kastl and Linda Robinson. Musical selections will be “On Eagle’s Wings”, “Amazing Grace”, “One Bread One Body” and “How Great Thou Art.” Pallbearers will be Tyler Martens, Logan Lukassen, Trenton Lukassen, Brook Beiermann, Brittney Beiermann, and Declan Martens. Inurnment will be in Circle Mound Cemetery in Rising City with Military Rites. Lunch will follow at the Shelby Legion Club.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated later.

Harold was born July 7, 1937, the fifth child of seven, on the family farm south of Rising City to John L. and Hildegard (Rathje) Martens. He attended grade school at rural District #43 and graduated from Rising City High School in 1956.

Harold joined the United States Army right out of high school where he was a gunner on a howitzer, spending most of his three year tour in Germany.

On May 28, 1960 he was united in marriage to JoAnn Gabriel at St. Vincent Catholic Church in Osceola. To this union four children were born. Harold farmed with his father and fed cattle and he enjoyed working with his cow herd. He worked for several years at Behlen Manufacturing until he was disabled in the mid 1990’s.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby, a former member of RCVFD. He served on the Butler County Weed Board, was a member of Columbus VFW Post 5704 and the Columbus Legion.

Harold enjoyed his children and grandchildren, gardening, sharing produce with friends and neighbors, watching the stockmarket and riding his golf cart.

Survivors include his wife JoAnn of Rising City; sons Monty Martens of Columbus and Jeff (Kathy) Martens of Rising City; daughters Penny (J.D.) Lukassen of Fayetteville, AR and Danielle (Jason) Beiermann of Columbus; grandchildren: Tyler Martens, Logan Lukassen, Trenton Lukassen, Brook Beiermann, Brittney Beiermann, Ryan Lukassen and Robin Rosno; great grandchildren: Declan Martens, William Rosno, Sam Rosno, Kaleb Hartford, Nevaeh Lukassen and Hunter Lukassen; sisters Irene Jones of Omaha and Mary Hoffman of Rising City; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Ruth (Ivan) Want, Lawrence Martens, Louie (Margaret) Martens, Luella (Donald) Gable, Merlyn Hoffman and Gary Jones.
