Gerald R. Johansen, age 86 of Osceola, Nebraska, passed away November 16, 2023 at his home in Osceola.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Osceola with Father Thomas Au officiating. Organist will be Avis Rathje. Congregational hymns will be “Be Not Afraid”, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”, “One Bread One Body” and “On Eagle’s Wings.” Lector will be Karen Miller. Acolyte will be Kraig Kuhnel. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church followed by a 7:00 p.m. Rosary. Interment will be in the Osceola Cemetery with Military Rites by Osceola Legion Post.
Gerald was born August 28, 1937 to Arthur and Alice (Kershaw) Johansen. He attended school in Osceola and graduated from Osceola High School in 1955. Following high school Gerald served in the United States Army from June 1956 until 1958. During that time he was stationed in Germany.
On October 11, 1958 he was united in marriage to Janet M. Kuhnel at Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church. To this union four children were born.
Gerald worked at the Osceola Feed Mill until moving to the farm in 1960. After farming for many years he retired in 2012. He remained on the farm until moving into Osceola in 2020.
Survivors include his wife Janet of Osceola; children: Cheryl (Mike) McMeekin of Osceola, Tim (Lorraine) Johansen of Osceola, Leann (Dave) Horak of St. Libory, and Kent (Renee) Johansen of Osceola; 12 grandchildren: Jenna Johansen of Osceola, Boyd (Tina) Johansen of Nurnberg, Germany, Jared (Brenda) Horak of Grand Island, Courtney (Levi) Bowlin of Mitchell, Nolan (Allie) Horak of St. Libory, Nathan (Meagan) Hubenka of Greenfield, Iowa, Derrick Hubenka of Humphrey, Marcus (Kaila) Hubenka of Aurora, Colorado, Alex (Jolie) Hubenka of Chambers, Brandi (Logan) Watts of Osceola, Cassi (fiance Dylan Koranda) Johansen of Seward, and Ginni Johansen of Lincoln; 11 great grandchildren: Ida and Estelle Johansen of Nurnberg, Germany, Nikolai, Corbin and Marcella Hubenka of Greenfield, Iowa, Garret and Cooper Horak of Grand Island, Kade and Kendall Watts of Osceola, Jack Horak of St. Libory and Harrison Hubenka of Aurora, CO; two step-great grandchildren: Addy and Ava Bowlin of Mitchell; brother: Bill Johansen of Osceola, sisters: Joan (Jim) Sterup of Stromsburg, and Dorothy Cole of Columbus; sister-in-law JoAnn Donelson of Stromsburg, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Alice; grandson Hutchinsen Johansen; one sister Patricia Richards; three brothers Eugene ‘Jinx’, Dennis and Robert Johansen; two brothers-in-law Gene Cole and David Richards; and two sisters-in-law Marjorie Johansen and Nadine Johansen.
