Florence Orpha Fjell, age 99, of Osceola, Nebraska, passed away September 1, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society in Osceola.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Osceola with Pastor Bob Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Organist will be Louise Wheeler. Special music will be "How Great Thou Art", "Great Is Thy Faithfulness", "Amazing Grace, My Chains Are Gone", and "Children Of The Heavenly Father." Pallbearers will be Bob Carey, Ryan Fjell, Bill Drozd, Toby Johansen, Kyle Johansen and Mike Branting. Interment will be in Swede Home Cemetery. The family is requesting masks be required to attend. Due to current COVID-19 health mandates, practice social distancing by maintaining at least 6 feet among attendees, family, staff, and clergy.
Orpha was born April 1, 1921 to Arthur and Florence (Carlson) Ekstrom at Swede Home.
She attended High Prairie school graduating in 1939. She then attended Luther College for her Normal training and taught in Dannebrog until she began teaching in Osceola.
On June 9, 1950 she was united in marriage to Joseph Luther Fjell in Swede Home. To this union two children were born.
While teaching she attended Concordia College where she received her teaching certificate. She continued working at Osceola schools until she retired in 1967.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Osceola where she was very active serving as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Osceola Legion Auxiliary, Bide-A-Wees club and was active in the Osceola Senior Center. She made prayer shawls and baptismal cloths. She was a great cook and baker.
Survivors include one son Joseph (Jackie) Fjell of Osceola and one daughter Elizabeth (Lindell) Whitney of Aurora, CO; two grandchildren Ryan (Jennifer) Fjell of Stromsburg and Shauna (Bill) Drozd of Osceola; nine great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and 11 step-great grandchildren; sisters Rosalie Engelhardt of Hastings and Mary Alice Spelts of Ft. Collins, CO, and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by husband Joseph who passed away January 17, 1974; infant sister Marjorie Ann Ekstrom; and one brother John Ekstrom.
Memorials are suggested to St. Paul Lutheran Church and Good Samaritan Society-Osceola.
