Elaine Umstead Obituary

Elaine Pearle Umstead age 102, of Osceola, Nebraska, passed away October 28, 2021 at the Osceola Good Samaritan Society.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Osceola with Pastor Teri Lucas officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, November 1 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola. Organist will be Louise Wheeler. Soloist will be Jane Roberts singing "Softly and Tenderly." Musical selections will be "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", and "When We All Get To Heaven." Pallbearers will be  Ben Kivett, Jeff Umstead, Miles Umstead, Ted Gleim, Les Umstead, Thomas Umstead, Chad Comeau and Cooper Miller. Interment will be in the Osceola Cemetery.
Elaine was born May 30, 1919 west of Gresham, Nebraska on the family farm to Earl and Goldie (Gleim) Bond. She attended country school Dist. 55 in York County. The family moved north of Osceola on March 1, 1930 and Elaine attended Miller Country School Dist. 53. She graduated from Osceola High School in 1937. She taught country school for one year and while saving her money she also received a scholarship and was able to attend the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for one year. On December 1, 1941 she began working in Lincoln with the Health Department in the Vital Statistics division until March of 1944. While living in Lincoln she met her future husband William Umstead who was in the service and helping to open the Lincoln Air Base.
On April 21, 1943 she was united in marriage to William Umstead in Lincoln. To this union three children were born. They moved to the farm in the Fairview community in September of 1951 where she attended the Fairview Church until it burned. She then became a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osceola. They moved into Osceola on September 1, 1979.
Elaine worked for the USDA for nearly 30 years until retiring at the end of May 1981. After her retirement from the USDA she worked part time in the Polk County Clerk's office until 1995.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osceola and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Elaine had many hobbies. She liked to sew and made quilts for her six grandchildren and denim quilts for some of the great grandchildren. She liked to travel in most of the states including Hawaii and Canada. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by going on a Disney cruise by Cape Canaveral. She also enjoyed playing cards, making afghans and working on jigsaw puzzles.
Survivors include her two sons: Alan (Leitha) Umstead of Winchester, Virginia and Brian Umstead of Osceola; six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband William who passed away November 29, 2005; 6 month old son Leslie; brother Alton Bond.
Memorials are suggested to the Osceola First United Methodist Church in lieu of flowers.
