Ardis Maureen (Niebuhr) Wilhelms
May 11, 1925 ~ December 23, 2023 (age 98) 98 Years Old
Ardis Maureen Wilhelms, age 98, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away December 23, 2023 at Savannah Pines in Lincoln.
Ardis was born May 11, 1925 to John and Adele (Haase) Niebuhr at Dalton, Nebraska. She was baptized in 1925 and confirmed in 1939 at Grace Lutheran Church in Gurley, Nebraska. She attended Center Country School through tenth grade. She then attended Sidney High School and graduated in 1942. Ardis attended Midland College for two years after which she moved to Denver and was employed at Carson Crockery for two years. During WWII she was a volunteer at the North Platte Canteen for troop trains traveling through North Platte.
She married Alton “Mook” Wilhelms on November 24, 1946 at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont, Nebraska. To this union five children were born. They moved to Polk where Mook had a job teaching and coaching at the high school. They purchased the Polk Progress in 1950, then in 1955 purchased the Headlight in Stromsburg followed with the Osceola Record in 1968 and the Shelby Sun in 1972. They also contracted with the Gresham Gazette to help with the production of that newspaper. They sold all three papers in January 28, 1983.
In retirement, they enjoyed traveling, visiting six continents, all fifty states and cruised the Aegean Sea, the Caribbean Sea and Mediterranean Sea. They also visited China and Russia. In 2008 they moved to Lincoln to be closer to their daughter and also to Husker games. She was a resident of Savannah Pines in Lincoln for 12 years.
Ardis was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 72 years. She was active in the Stromsburg Salem Lutheran Church. She volunteered at the Swedish Festival for years and was Queen in 1986. She was a huge fan of Husker athletics.
Ardis is survived by her five children, Gregory (Linda) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Douglas of Chicago, Illinois, Brenda of Scottsdale, Arizona, Wendy of Phoenix, Arizona and Wanda (Greg) of Lincoln; grandchildren Emily, Jeffrey (Suzanne), Joanna, Madison and Devon; great grandchildren Greyson and Greta; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Mook who passed away April 10, 2018, and her parents.
A Graveside Memorial service will be held at a later date.
